A Day of Springtime Adventures in Colorado: Hiking, Biking, and More

Spring in Colorado means longer days, wildflowers starting to bloom, and that perfect window between snowmelt and summer heat when the mountains feel alive with possibility. If you’re searching for a Pagosa Springs hotel for a spring getaway, this is one of the most rewarding times of year to be here. Lower-elevation trails begin clearing, rivers run fast with snowmelt, and there is still room to slow down and enjoy it all. Here’s how to spend a full day taking advantage of everything the season has to offer.

Understanding Spring in Pagosa Springs

Spring weather in the mountains is famously unpredictable. You might start your morning in 40-degree temps and end your afternoon in the 70s. Snowmelt makes trails muddy in spots, and higher elevations might still have snow patches well into May. But that’s part of what makes spring adventures special. You’re experiencing the mountains in transition.

Dressing for spring in Pagosa Springs means embracing layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating mid-layer like fleece or light down, and top everything with a windproof or waterproof shell. Pack extra layers in your daypack, even if it looks sunny, as the weather can change fast. Waterproof hiking boots are also essential since trails get muddy from snowmelt, and you’ll encounter puddles and possibly stream crossings. Bring a hat and gloves for early morning, plus sunglasses and sunscreen for midday when that high-altitude sun gets intense. If you own a pair of Gaiters, now is the time to break them out to keep mud and debris out of your boots on messy spring trails.

Morning: Scenic Hike to Start the Day

Start your day with our complimentary breakfast. Fuel up with coffee, hot waffles, and everything you need for an active morning. Pack some extra snacks like trail mix, energy bars, fruit, and plenty of water. Spring hiking burns more calories than you think, especially at higher altitudes.

The Piedra River Trail is one of our favorite spring hikes in Colorado because it offers dramatic scenery without requiring you to climb too high, where there might still be snow. The trail starts about 19 miles from RiverWalk Inn via Piedra Road, a scenic 30-minute drive north.

Park at the upper trailhead and follow the trail as it descends into a spectacular sandstone box canyon. As the trail leaves the canyon and follows the river, the landscape opens up, and spring often brings some of the season’s first wildflowers. Keep your eyes out for early bloomers like white daisies, spring beauties, and glacier lilies.

At 1.75 miles, you’ll reach the First Bridge spanning Williams Creek. This makes a great turnaround point for a 3.5-mile round trip hike that takes most people 2-2.5 hours. The meadow here is beautiful for a snack break before heading back.

The first section has some elevation change, so take your time descending into the canyon. Trekking poles help with balance on muddy or uneven sections. River access is easy if you want to dip your hands in the icy water, though fair warning: it’s cold. Wildlife is active in spring, so watch for elk, deer, and birds as you hike.

Backup option: Treasure Falls

If you’re traveling with young kids, prefer a shorter outing, or want to save energy for the rest of the day, Treasure Falls offers a quick but rewarding hike. Located just 15 minutes east of Pagosa Springs on Highway 160, the half-mile trail climbs to views of the 105-foot waterfall. Spring is prime time for waterfalls, as the snowmelt makes them dramatic and powerful. The hike takes about 30-45 minutes round-trip.

Midday: Picnic and Disc Golf at Reservoir Hill Park

Head back to downtown and grab lunch at Patria. This local favorite serves excellent handcrafted sandwiches, wraps perfect for taking to the park. While you’re downtown, stop by Pagosa Mountain Sports to rent disc golf discs and bikes for the afternoon.

While there are many parks in Pagosa Springs perfect for spring picnics, Reservoir Hill is our top pick for today since it offers so much variety. Find a picnic table or spread out on the grass and settle in for a while. Mountain views open up around you, and after a morning on the trail, it is the kind of place where it feels easy to stay longer than you planned. If a slower afternoon sounds good, linger over lunch, stretch out in the sun, or take a short walk through the park trails.

Reservoir Hill also has a free-to-play 18-hole disc golf course that winds through varied terrain with open meadows, pine forests, and hillside slopes that make for interesting shots. Spring means you might encounter some muddy patches, but nothing that will ruin your game.

Late Afternoon: Sunset Biking

Option 1: Reservoir Hill Trails

After disc golf, hop on your bikes and explore Reservoir Hill’s mountain biking trails. The park features hiking and biking trails that wind through the terrain you just played disc golf on, giving you a different perspective of the same beautiful landscape.

The trails offer varied riding with some technical sections, moderate climbs, and fun descents. Spring wildflowers line the paths, and the afternoon light makes the San Juan Mountains look spectacular. Spend an hour or so exploring the trails, you can ride as much or as little as feels right after your morning hike and disc golf session.

Option 2: Casual Riverwalk Ride

The Downtown Pagosa Springs Riverwalk Trail offers an easy, paved route perfect for all abilities. Start at RiverWalk Inn and follow the path as it winds through downtown alongside the San Juan River. You’ll pass the geothermal greenhouse domes at Centennial Park, Town Park with its riverside setting, and the famous Pagosa hot springs steaming in the cool evening air. Local shops and cafés make perfect quick stops, while Cotton Hole Park’s riverside beaches and Yamaguchi Park’s playgrounds and open spaces add variety to the route.

The Riverwalk is mostly flat and family-friendly, making it ideal if you want scenic views without technical riding. Spring evenings bring out locals walking dogs, families playing, and that relaxed small-town atmosphere that makes Pagosa special.

Evening: Dinner at a Local Favorite

After your ride, choose between two excellent dinner spots that locals love.

Benny’s Restaurant & Cantina is a welcoming spot with a menu that satisfies everyone. Their combination of classic American fare and Mexican favorites means you can get a great burger or enchiladas depending on what you’re craving after a full day of adventure.

If you want something more upscale, head to Meander Eatery. Their seasonally driven menu changes frequently based on what’s fresh from local farmers, featuring creative dishes that showcase regional ingredients. The riverside location and thoughtful execution make it perfect for celebrating a day well spent.

Late Night: Relax and Recharge with a Soak

End your adventure day the right way: soaking sore muscles in hot water.

Overlook Hot Springs at 432 Pagosa Street is open until 10 pm Sunday through Thursday and until 11 pm Friday and Saturday. No reservations needed. Their rooftop pools offer mountain and river views, plus they have indoor pools at varying temperatures. They even sell beer and wine, if you’d like a nightcap as you soak.

The Springs Resort offers another option with over 20 geothermal pools at varying temperatures. The pools are cleared at 9:30pm, so plan accordingly if you choose this location.

Spring evenings at the hot springs are special. The air temperature has cooled, making the contrast with the hot mineral water even more satisfying. Steam rises into the night sky, and on a clear night, you’ll see stars starting to appear over the mountains.

If you’d rather stay in after your big day, RiverWalk Inn has you covered. Our indoor hot tub and sauna are perfect for unwinding without the crowds at the hot springs. The relaxing ambiance of Pagosa Springs in the evening, the quiet streets, the sound of the river, and the mountain air cooling down make the perfect ending to a day spent exploring. You’ll sleep well knowing you made the most of spring in Colorado.
